Fantastic book on an inspiring American painter. The reproductions are wonderful with great color printing and strong pages. The text is well written and informative, giving you good insight into not only Brown but at times referencing other artists and their work during his life. The genre scenes really stand out as a look back to a time when you could not just snap a pic of people instantaneity. Browns drawings and sketches show good insight into finished paintings. Some photos of works are in black & white but that does not hinder this fine book on American Art.Product details

Excellent book. Art plus history of the great artist. Most of the time you buy an art book and the text is not very interesting. Not this book! Love it!
This is a beautiful book with lovely reproductions of J.G. Brown's paintings. It clearly takes the reader through the various stages of Brown's career.
Great biography.
This book contained numerous illustrations of Brown's paintings and the author was very helpful in helping the reader understand how to see the amazing detail of Brown's paintings.
J. G. Brown's work will live forever because of its fine artistry and this book. It is a masterpiece in itself, born from the love of a genius American artist who chronicled, through his beautiful paintings, our very own nineteenth century everyday life. The quality of the publication is excellent. If you are at all curious about charming domestic, urban, and country life in America from around 1860-1910 portrayed by an expert and optimistic delineator, this is the book for you. This monograph by Martha Hoppin exceeded all of our expectations and we cherish it.
